Laurie Thorpe

Children and Young People’s Service Youth Worker

I am delighted to work with MDC as a Child & Youth Worker within the CYPS. I am a hearing person currently learning BSL. I chose to learn BSL to help reduce the gap between hearing and Deaf communities. I previously worked as a nurse within Greater Manchester where I sincerely communicated and advocated for all people I met. I petition, it is essential that all individuals can express their opinions, needs, concerns, and fears easily, yet for many, especially within the deaf community, this is often an isolating experience due to limitations of the hearing society. BSL unites people of all communication methods.

The values and opportunities that MDC and CYPS deliver and demonstrate, are fundamental to a just and inclusive society. I am proud to be part of team which provides creative, safe, and nurturing environments for children and young people to explore new activities and issues. Helping children and young people equip and prepare for the next phases of their lives is essential to experiencing healthy, safe, and happy lives. BSL is a beautiful indigenous language, an educational and cultural right for deaf children, young people, adults and their families. I proudly support local and national campaigns.

In my spare time, I love gardening! I am always impressed by the beauty of the sky and colours of the landscape!
