I am the only Deaf member of my family, with my parents, brother and other family members all being hearing. I was given hearing aids as a young child and grew up speaking Urdu as a first language until the age of 11. I then began to learn English, Sign Supported English (SSE) and British Sign Language (BSL). BSL has now become my main language, and I have since learnt American Sign Language (ASL) and International Sign Language (ISL) as an adult. Due to my background and experience, I feel as though I am comfortable and belong in both the Deaf and hearing worlds. I had used a cochlear implant device since 2013, having surgery in my early 30s.
I first joined Manchester Deaf Centre in 2023, and I think it’s important that we breakdown communication barriers, make adjustments and continue to improve as part of building a new future. I enjoy teaching British Sign Language and aim to create a fun environment for my students, where they can learn and joke with me. I also feel it’s very important for my students to learn new communication methods and Deaf Culture.
As well as this, I am a qualified designer of textile design and interior design with a BA (Hons) from Wolverhampton University. I'm passionate about creating unique designs of my own work. In my free time, I love going to art galleries and listening to music, including concerts. I like designing my home, plus travelling and holidays with family and friends. My favourite thing to do to is read a variety of fiction and nonfiction books.
