In 2020, Manchester Deaf Centre secured funding from The Prince's Trust for an exciting FREE new project ‘Get On’. 18 amazing young people from Manchester, Bolton, Salford, and Stockport have joined the 12-month project and we are already halfway through! ‘Get On’ includes social activities, one-to-one mentoring, job and career guidance, practical workshops including help with CVs and how to prepare for an interview, and work placements.
We have had a busy couple of months during which Get On young people have participated in:
Generally we have focused on regaining confidence post Covid, staying connected, supporting each other, and having some fun! One of our Get On young people shared his thoughts recently during the Get On outdoor activities day:
‘Today has been awesome – I felt like ‘James Bond’ on the speed boat. I think I will come back to the water centre on my own; I’ve checked out their website and you can do that. ‘Get On’ is awesome; I’ve made so many deaf new friends, so much better than gaming on my own in my bedroom. Can’t wait for the next event: I’ve got some ideas – think I might join the Planning Group!’
Unfortunately, we do not have any places left on the ‘Get On’ project. However, we are hoping that new smaller projects will evolve from ‘Get On’, including young people who want to set up their own ‘micro business’, so watch this space!
